I don't know the official date, but I do know that it was a new year's resolution in 2007 that started this whole running business. So I'm counting January 1st as my runiversary. You might not be familiar with that term, but I think you can figure it out, right? It's the day to celebrate when I first started running.
Now, what's to celebrate? Well, I'm so glad you asked that question!
While there are many things about running that I really dislike, I also know enough to have figured out that running is a good thing. It is difficult, sometimes boring, strenuous, and frustrating. But at the same time, it has taught me commitment and determination. It has taught me that health is important and that I am important. It has shown me that I can do things that I never thought I could do. So I think it's worth celebrating!
We celebrated today by... not running. :) But we did watch a whole bunch of other people who were running. Gary, Katherine, Oliver, and I volunteered at the Team Ortho Polar Dash. We were out there with our annoying cowbells and cheered on runners as they worked their way through the 5k, 10k, or half-marathon course on this snowy, slippery, windy New Year's Day. I have run the Polar Dash in previous years and it is definitely my nemesis. I have a definite appreciation for those who are willing to take on the elements on this day. And I know that having a little cheering section is incredibly helpful when you're out on a course where there are hardly any spectators. So we cheered with all of our might and I hope that we were able to put a little spring in the steps of at least a few runners.
So... happy 5 year runiversary to me! I'm hoping that this year will give me a renewed spirit when it comes to physical fitness. I'm changing the game a bit and trying to get in some activity other than running. I figure it can only be a good thing, right?
